According to the law of attraction, for your dreams to come true, you must first focus on and visualize them. Ignore the obstacles and believe that you can achieve them. In our case, the dream is clear: winning the lottery. If it’s a huge jackpot, even better. But we wouldn’t mind a smaller prize either.
So, the next time you buy a ticket, tell yourself: “I’m going to win“. Picture the moment you hold the winning ticket—see your excitement, the prize, and the numbers. Visualize it all. Got it? It might help to hear a real lottery winner’s story or watch a movie about it.
There are tons of movies out there that will make you dream, laugh, and think about your lottery strategy. Trust me, you’ve got plenty to choose from. Hollywood has brought this dream to the big screen more than once. The best part? Not all are pure fiction—some are based on real-life lottery winners.
To save you from scrolling endlessly through search results, here are five of the best lottery movies you shouldn’t miss. Pick your favorite and plan a movie night at home.
Top 5: Movies About Winning the Lottery That You Must See
1. Jerry & Marge Go Large (2022) – A Light Comedy Based on a True Story
This one’s one of my favorites! Based on the true story of Jerry and Marge Selbee shows an ordinary couple who made their lottery dreams come true. No, I’m not just talking about winning the lottery once. They found a loophole in the system and used it to win multiple times.
For nearly a decade, Jerry and Marge Selbee held dozens of winning tickets from two different US state lotteries. Between 2003 and 2012, they won a total of $26 million. An everything they did was 100% legal. They didn’t break a single lottery law.
This story was so incredible that Hollywood had to turn it into a film. This lottery movie is fun, light, and super easy to watch. And the cast? Fantastic: Bryan Cranston, Annette Bening, and Rainn Wilson. It’s perfect for unwinding after a long week. Who knows? Maybe you’ll come up with your way to win Pick 3 or even a Mega Millions jackpot after watching it.
And if you do, please share the formula with us!
2. Lucky Numbers (2000): A Dark Comedy Movie About a Lottery Scam
This isn’t your typical movie about winning the lottery. It’s not about getting lucky; it’s about how far someone will go to win. The main character, Russ Richards, is a local TV weatherman about to lose everything. Desperate, he teams up with the lottery girl to rig the state lottery drawing. At first, it seems like a genius plan—until things start to go sideways.
The movie is inspired by the real-life Pennsylvania Lottery scandal of 1980, the “Triple Six Fix”. In that scandal, a TV lottery host and co-conspirators rigged a three-digit lottery drawing.
Fair warning: This one’s a dark comedy. It’s humorous, but not everyone will find it funny. If you like edgy, satirical stuff, you’ll enjoy it. It’s got two big things going for it: the cast—John Travolta, Lisa Kudrow, Tim Roth, and Ed O’Neill—and the plot itself. I mean, who hasn’t watched a live lottery drawing and thought, “What if I could get the lottery girl on my side?”
3. Lottery Ticket (2010): A Funny Movie About Luck, Money, and Friendship
This comedy will have you laughing out loud. Kevin Carson plays a young guy from Atlanta who discovers he has a winning ticket worth $370 million. That’s right—$370 million!
There’s just one problem: it’s a holiday weekend, so he has to wait three days before he can cash it in. Sounds easy enough, right? It would have been—if only his grandma hadn’t told the whole neighborhood that they hit the jackpot.
That’s when things start to spiral. Friendly neighbors turned greedy, criminals appeared, and even his closest friends started acting differently. That’s the thing about money—it can bring out the best or the worst in people.
Still, the movie handles it all with humor. It’s a super fun lottery movie to watch with friends or family. Plus it comes with a lesson: If you ever win big, keep it to yourself!
The cast is excellent, too: Shad Moss, Brandon T. Jackson, Ice Cube and Terry Crews.
4. It Could Happen to You (1994): A Romantic Story About Sharing a Winning Ticket
Yeah, I know—it’s an oldie, but that doesn’t make it any less special. In fact, we’ve mentioned it before on the blog when discussing inspiring lottery winner stories. Back then, though, we focused more on real-life lottery winners than on the movie itself.
Yes, this film is also based on a true story. It’s one of those movies that leaves you smiling.
Charlie Lang is a kindhearted cop who doesn’t have enough money for a tip, so he promises the waitress he’ll split his lottery ticket with her. Guess what? The ticket won, and they took home $4 million. Because Charlie’s a man of his word, he kept his promise and shared the prize with Yvonne.
In the movie, however, the characters find more than luck in the lottery; they also find love. I won’t say more—no spoilers—but it’s definitely a feel-good story that leaves you with good vibes.
And the cast? Pretty solid: Nicolas Cage, Bridget Fonda, and Rosie Perez.
5. In the Heights (2021): A Musical with a Lottery Twist and Big Dreams
Like musicals? Then this movie is for you—it has music, dreams, and lottery tickets all in one.
Based on the hit Broadway show, In the Heights follows the stories of several neighbors in Washington Heights, New York. The main character is Usnavi, a young man who owns a small corner store and dreams of returning to the Dominican Republic.
However, just before he leaves, he finds out that a winning New York Lottery ticket worth $96,000 was sold at his store. That changes everything. Suddenly, everyone in the neighborhood starts imagining what they would do with that money. That’s when the fantastic musical number “96,000” begins.
This lottery movie is full of energy and rhythm. The cast is amazing: Anthony Ramos, Melissa Barrera, Leslie Grace and Corey Hawkins. And the story pulls you in right from the start.
